Garmin Nuvi 760 Portable GPS Unit Reviewed

Apr-1st-2009

Let’s take a look at why the Garmin Nuvi 760 is at the top of the best seller lists in most online GPS retailers . Mostly it’s linked to customer expectations – basically what they are looking for in their GPS Navigation equipment.

These expectations are more than met by the Garmin Nuvi 760 as we shall see.

First of all there’s the Garmin name and its reputation for reliable and accurate operation. The last thing a user wants is a GPS unit that lets them down at important times.

Then we have to look at the ergonomics of the Garmin Nuvi range and the Nuvi 760 in particular. Here we have a great looking device and display , a unit designed to be portable in every way. A unit that is designed to be read in even the most demanding lighting situations.

When we take these factors into account, it’s easy to see what makes the Garmin Nuvi 760 Portable GPS unit the bes of its kind on the market. And we haven’t even looked yet at the NAVTEQ maps for the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico that come with the unit as standard. These maps contain more than seven million name-searchable points of interest.

Some other features of this portable GPS receiver are that it comes with the Where Am I? And Where’s My Car? features. These allow the user, with a tap of the screen, to display their exact location coordinates as well as detailed information on the surrounding area. There is also a feature whereby the Garmin Nuvi 760 makes a note of its current location wherever it is in the country when removed from the support, this means that a driver can easily find his or her car when it is left in the street or in a parking lot.

There’s an mp3 player, spoken directions with real street names, and an FM transmitter that will play voice prompts directly via the vehicle’s stereo system. The FM transmitter allows traffic reports to be received which is a great help in avoiding congestion.

This GPS unit also comes with traffic receivers and Bluetooth operation for hands-free calling – features that you don’t get with all the Nuvi range.

Now let’s take a look at the display, this is a super-bright, 4.3-inch anti-glare touchscreen for viewing in all ambient lighting. The widescreen format provides you with 69 per centmore actual screen area than the older 3.5-inch screen.

Finally, hands-free operation with Bluetooth capability, microphone and speaker, means that the Nuvi 760 can communicate with any bluetooth-capable phone allowing a driver to make hands-free mobile phone calls at any time. The Nuvi’s touch screen keypad is used to dial the number to make a call on a bluetooth-compatible phone. When answering an incoming call, the driver just taps the screen and speaks into the built-in microphone.
