The Global Positioning Satellite System was first developed for military use. It was first started around 1994 when it saw active use during Operation Desert Storm. One could say that the success of the war was hinged around the GPS system. They were able to see during the night where even the local rebels could not. Even after all of it, GPS is still being used for monitoring satellite and spacecraft coordination.
